How does SSO(Single Sign-on) Authentication work?
SSO is now widely used more than ever. Nowadays, almost every website requires some authentication to access its features and content. With the increasing number of websites and services, a centralized login system has become a necessity. In this post, we will study how the SSO certification for the web is implemented.
Federated Identity Glossary
The concept of a centralized or linked electronic identity is known as a union identity. Federated identification systems handle many concerns :
- Authentication deals with validating user credentials and establishing the identity of the user.

Single Sign-On(SSO) authentication
Web development teams have to face a problem sooner or later: You have developed an application on Domain X and now you want to use your login information similar to other domains for your new deployment on domain Y. In fact, you want more. : You want users who are already logged on domain X at the login-y domain. This is about SSO.
The solution to this problem is that we need to share session information between different domains. By keeping security reasons in mind, browser enforces a policy known as the same origin policy. This policy dictates that cookies and other locally stored data can be accessible by its creator. In other words, Domain A cannot access cookies from Domain B or vice-versa. This is what SSO solution solve in one way or the other: sharing session information across different Domains.
There are different ways to share session information through different SSO protocols. But the main concept is the same: there is a central domain, by which authentication is performed, and then the session is shared with other domains in some other way.
For example, the central domain can generate a signed JSON web token (JWT), which can be encrypted using JSON Web Encryption (JWE). This token can be passed to the client and can be used by the authentication domain as well as any other domain. The token can be redirected to the original domain by redirecting and it contains all the information needed to identify the user for the domain that requires authentication. As the token is signed, it can not be modified by the client in any way.
Whenever users go to a domain that requires authentication, they will be redirected to the authentication domain. If any user is already logged-in at that domain, they can be redirected immediately to the original domain with the necessary authentication token.
